Voting Underway for Snap Presidential Elections in Iran Amid Grave Economic Crisis, Regional War

Amid domestic discontent and regional turmoil, Iranians are picking up their next president today following the untimely death of late President Ebrahim Raisi in a fatal helicopter crash a month back. Consequently, voters have six new faces, a choice between hard-line candidates and a few candidates from Iran’s reformist movement that seeks to change the country’s Shiite theocracy. However, as has been the case since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, women and those calling for radical change have been barred from the ballot.
