James Augustus Hickey started India’s first newspaper ‘Bengal Gazette’ from Calcutta on January 29, 1780. The newspaper was published weekly every Saturday in English. Initially, the newspaper was priced at 1 rupee, and it had a circulation of more than 400. ‘Bengal Gazette’ stirred controversy among powerful prominent officials under British rule with his news publication.
