Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria, born on 29 November 1935 in Jagraon, Punjab, was martyred on 5 December 1961 while serving in the United Nations Congo Mission. Commissioned in 1957 into the 1 Gorkha Rifles, he led his unit to confront 150 Katanga rebels blocking the road near Elisabethville Airport.
