‘Ready To Share Our Journey’: Amid Poor Air Quality in North India, China Sees an Opportunity
Amid the current geopolitical rebalancing, China sees an opening to rekindle positive sentiment in India. It has offered to help the country deal with worsening air pollution, saying it is ready to share its experience in controlling smog. The offer comes as Delhi and surrounding regions continue to grapple with “severe” air quality, with the AQI crossing 400 in several areas.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India said on X that China once struggled with smog as well and is willing to share its “journey toward blue skies.”
The development comes at a time when India–US ties are going through rocky waters and India–China relations are witnessing a thaw after years of border hostilities. While this thaw has not sat well with critics of India’s current foreign policy, New Delhi has consistently maintained that its decisions are guided solely by national interest and that it refuses to be boxed into any bloc — whether a US-led Western camp or a rising China.

“Diversionary Tactics”: BJP Rubbishes Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Vote Theft’ Allegations, Call Them Baseless and Misleading
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday dismissed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s allegations of large-scale electoral fraud in Haryana, calling them a “diversionary tactic” ahead of the Bihar elections. Rijiju said the Congress was trying to “hide its failures” and “find excuses for its impending defeat” as Bihar goes to polls soon. He added that Rahul Gandhi should focus on real issues rather than creating unnecessary controversies. Rijiju also rejected Gandhi’s “vote theft” claims as baseless, saying the voter list had already been verified and fake entries removed.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had alleged that around 25 lakh fake voter entries were used to manipulate the Haryana Assembly elections, accusing the Election Commission and BJP of collusion. Following his statement, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also hit out at Gandhi, calling his claims a “ploy to escape responsibility for another defeat.” Pradhan said the Congress and its allies were facing rejection in Bihar, and Gandhi’s allegations were an attempt to divert attention from that reality.

Once Complaint Discloses Commission of Offence, Magistrates Have Powers To Ask Police To Register FIR: Supreme Court
In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court of India held that once a complaint discloses commission of an offence, the magistrates have power to direct police to register FIR under Section 156(3) Cr.P.C (now Section 175(3) of BNSS). The two-judge bench of Justices Pankaj Mithal and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah stressed that at the pre-cognizance stage the Magistrate only needs to assess whether the complaint discloses a cognizable offense, not whether the allegations are true or substantiated.
The court gave this ruling while dismissing Karnataka High Court’s decision which quashed the FIR registered on magistrate’s direction under Section 156(3) Cr.P.C.
In the recent case, after police initially failed to act on a complaint regarding a forged rent agreement, the Judicial Magistrate First Class directed registration of an FIR for forgery, cheating, and criminal conspiracy. However, the Karnataka High Court quashed the FIR and the magistrate’s order which has now been set aside by the apex court.
Supreme Court to Decide Guidelines for District Judge Promotions, Considering Quota and Experience for Promotees
The Supreme Court has reserved its judgment on whether a quota should be provided for promoting serving judicial officers to District Judge posts. This comes after concerns were raised about career stagnation for officers who join at entry-level positions like Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), many of whom rarely reach the level of Principal District Judge. A five-judge bench, headed by CJI BR Gavai, is examining whether uniform pan-India guidelines should be set for determining inter-se seniority in the judicial service. The court is considering proposals such as creating a quota for promotee judges, giving weightage for experience, or using alternative seniority lists, with input from senior advocates and the amicus curiae to ensure fair representation of both promotees and direct recruits in higher judicial posts.
Key Points / Issues Being Considered:
- Whether a quota should exist for Promotee District Judges in Selection Grade, Super Time Scale, and Principal District Judge posts.
- Whether experience-based weightage should be given to promotee officers (1 year seniority for every 5 years of service, max 3 years).
- Whether a 1:1 ratio of promotees to direct recruits should be maintained in appointments to higher posts.
- Alternative seniority lists for Promotee (Regular), Promotee (LDCE), and Direct Recruits as per Andhra Pradesh High Court recommendation (ratio 50:25:25).
- Ensuring career growth for officers recruited at the entry-level (JMFC) to prevent stagnation.
- Balancing merit, seniority, and experience without creating a sub-cadre within the District Judge cadre.
